The presidential palace and many other public buildings in Port-Au-Prince were destroyed by the earthquake, Haitian television reported Tuesday.
"The presidential palace, the finance ministry, the ministry of public works, the ministry of communication and culture," were all affected by the quake, a Haitian reporter said, adding that the parliament building and the cathedral in the capital were also crumbling.
A Miami Herald journalist said President Rene Preval escaped.
The earthquake also destroyed the headquarters of the United Nations peacekeeping mission on the island, a local employee of the UN force said.
